Saadiyat Rotana, UAE

Sun-kissed sands stretching endlessly, turquoise waters lapping at your feet, and the grandeur of modern Arabic architecture framing it all – this isn’t just a dream, it’s your arrival at the Saadiyat Rotana Resort & Villas in the UAE. Nestled on the pristine shores of Saadiyat Island, this 5-star haven promises a symphony of luxury, relaxation, and cultural immersion, making it the perfect canvas for your unforgettable Abu Dhabi adventure.

Why did we choose this hotel

After several enchanting visits to Abu Dhabi, Saadiyat Island had become our go-to escape from the dreary European autumn. This time, with our 11-year-old daughter, we craved a 10-day haven of sun-drenched beaches, Arabian hospitality, and cultural immersion. Having already stayed in three of the Saadiyat beach’s exquisite hotels – the Park Hyatt Saadiyat had charmed us with its serene luxury and St. Regis Saadiyat had wowed us with its opulent elegance, Rixos Saadiyat wasn’t quite our cup of tea. This time, we yearned to compare experiences, to discover the unique charm of the Saadiyat Rotana.

The location

Located on a stretch of Saadiyat Island’s pristine, 9km-long white sand beach, Saadiyat Rotana felt less like a hotel and more like a hidden gem.  Importantly, the beach directly adjacent to the hotel is private and exclusive to guests of the five luxury 5-star hotels on Saadiyat Beach. This ensures a tranquil and serene environment for guests to relax and enjoy the crystal-clear waters of the Arabian Gulf.

Getting there: distance from Abu Dhabi downtown: Approximately 10 kilometers, offering a 15-minute drive for accessing the city’s vibrant core. Distance from Abu Dhabi International Airport: Around 20 kilometers, making it a convenient 25-minute journey for arriving guests. Distance from Dubai Airport: Approximately 144 kilometers, requiring a longer travel time of roughly 1 hour and 20 minutes by car.

Getting around: for guests seeking to venture beyond the resort’s private beachfront and explore the city, Saadiyat Rotana offers seamless transportation options. Simply head to the reception or lobby, and they will gladly arrange a taxi for your desired destination. Taxis are readily available, often queuing outside the hotel for immediate service. The fare structure for taxis in Abu Dhabi is transparent and metered, ensuring fair and predictable costs. While the exact fare depends on the final distance traveled, a general estimate is approximately AED 2 per kilometer (approx. 0,4 USD) excluding starting fare of AED 5 and waiting time. The fare is a little bit more expensive during night time. This translates to highly affordable transportation compared to many other major cities.

Arrival and Lobby

Our late-night arrival at Saadiyat Rotana, around 10 pm, was anything but ordinary. The hotel glowed under the evening lights, beckoning us with its welcoming warmth. Stepping out of the taxi pre-arranged by Rotana (a smooth 1,5 hour transfer from Dubai airport), we entered the spacious lobby, captivated by the mesmerizing frame adorned with hundreds of twinkling crystals.

The reception staff greeted us with genuine smiles and a refreshing efficiency. After the initial pleasantries, we were delighted to be offered a room preview before settling in – a practice we always appreciate. While the initial room boasted undeniable beauty, its balcony unfortunately faced a construction site (a new hotel rising between Rotana and St. Regis). Opting for an alternative, we were promptly offered another room with a serene pool view or an upgrade for a little surcharge to ocean view room and boy, the view instantly exceeding our expectations.

Despite arriving after the dinner buffet had concluded, the staff’s attentiveness remained unwavering. They ensured we weren’t left hungry, offering a set menu option at any of the resort’s diverse restaurants. This gesture truly exemplified the Saadiyat Rotana’s commitment to guest satisfaction and went a long way in setting the stage for a memorable stay.

Our room

Stepping into our room on the third floor, we were immediately embraced by its modern, cozy, and inviting atmosphere. The king-size bed promised restful nights, while the extra bed for our daughter ensured everyone had comfortable sleeping quarters. The decor was a delightful blend of modern sleekness and warm tones, creating a peaceful haven.

The bathroom was a luxurious retreat in itself. Double sinks, a spacious walk-in shower, and a separate toilet provided ample space and convenience. But the true centerpiece was the oversized bathtub, perfect for soaking away the day’s adventures.

The undisputed highlight, however, was the balcony. Stepping out onto the comfortable lounge bed, we were greeted by a breathtaking panorama. Lush gardens, the sparkling pool, and the endless expanse of the ocean stretched before us, offering stunning views that shifted magically throughout the day and night. We were especially fortunate to have a room facing the sunrise, allowing us to enjoy the balcony throughout the day without battling the afternoon sun.

The hotel’s thoughtful design divided it into sections, each with its own elevator-accessible entrance to the pool and beach. This clever layout meant skipping long walks back to the reception, a huge plus when juggling inflatable toys and sand-covered flip flops and soaking wet swimsuits.

Restaurants and Bars

Our half-board stay at Saadiyat Rotana offered a convenient way to fuel our island adventures, but the breakfast buffet, while decent, wasn’t the most extravagant we’ve encountered. Resorts like St. Regis and Park Hyatt boasted wider selections, though Saadiyat Rotana delivered on fresh ingredients and diverse dishes. We particularly enjoyed the fluffy omelets made to order and the perfectly flaky croissants. While the fruit station offered watermelons, pineapple, and a fruit mix, we did miss the tropical allure of passion fruit, papaya, mango, and dragon fruit. Thankfully, the attentive staff went above and beyond, readily fulfilling our requests for these missing gems.

Speaking of service, it’s time to acknowledge the breakfast setting’s mischievous residents – the crows. These “young delinquents,” added an unexpected dash of entertainment to our mornings. Perched patiently on trees and umbrellas, they’d swoop down with lightning speed the moment an unattended plate appeared, making off with waffles, pancakes, and even sugar packets (with a curious preference for brown!). While their antics were undeniably amusing, a word to the wise: keep a watchful eye on your plate, or you might find yourself returning to an empty chair and a crow enjoying your breakfast.

Now, let’s move on to the dinner scene! While the initial buffet was pleasant, it didn’t quite blow us away. This prompted us to embark on a culinary adventure through the resort’s various restaurants.

Turtle Bay: This was where our hearts (and stomachs) truly found their haven. The outdoor seating next to the shimmering pool created a magical ambiance, enhanced by the attentive service and, of course, the food. The Wagyu steak was a melt-in-your-mouth masterpiece, seasoned to perfection and cooked to a juicy rare. Every bite was a celebration of culinary excellence.

Si: While we appreciated the quaint garden setting with its artificial grass carpet and fountain, the atmosphere lacked a certain spark. The food was decent, but not particularly memorable. Perhaps we missed something on the menu, but it didn’t quite live up to our expectations.

Hamilton Gastropub: This spot held a special place in our hearts, mainly because it was where we landed after our late arrival. Their comfort food hit the spot perfectly, and the service was warm and welcoming. We enjoyed juicy burgers and crispy fries, the perfect antidote to travel fatigue.

Pool Bar: This became our daily sunset ritual. The 1+1 happy hour cocktails were a delightful indulgence, and the live DJ spun vibrant tunes while we relaxed in the funky swing chairs overlooking the breathtaking sunsets. Each evening was a sensory delight.

However, Turtle Bay remained our undisputed favorite. From day three onwards, it became our exclusive dinner destination. The exceptional food, stunning views, impeccable service, and lively atmosphere all came together in perfect harmony. The Wagyu steak remained a constant source of joy, but we also savored the succulent seafood platter and the melt-in-your-mouth tiramisu. Turtle Bay left us with memories that will linger long after our tan fades.

The beach

Stretching out like a dream, naturally beautiful Saadiyat Beach unfolds in kilometers of untouched splendor. Powdery white sand, soft as flour underfoot, gives way to turquoise waters that dance in a symphony of blues – crystal clear and invitingly shallow. This natural haven is teeming with marine life, from playful dolphins (best spotted early mornings) to little fish, curious starfish, and graceful rays. Sunsets here are masterpieces, each evening painting the sky in a unique blend of fiery hues. Long walks along the shore are pure bliss, the rhythmic sound of waves a soothing lullaby.

The hotel thoughtfully provides plush sunbeds and umbrellas, a perfect haven for relaxation. While the divided sections (adults only and families) were a thoughtful touch, we personally felt the family area, buzzing with joyful energy, wasn’t the ideal fit for us. Our teen daughter and us, yearning for moments of quiet reading or restful naps, found ourselves amidst the joyful energy of the family section. While we wholeheartedly embrace children’s laughter and play, there were moments when the lack of respect towards other guests, like unattended children throwing sand or screaming throughout the day, disrupted the desired serenity. Perhaps a dedicated “tranquility zone” for both adults and families, regardless of age, seeking a quieter experience would be a welcome addition, catering to a broader spectrum of preferences.

What truly sets Saadiyat Beach apart is its private status, reserved exclusively for guests of the surrounding luxury resorts. This creates a peaceful haven where you can relax and unwind without the crowds.

Our last morning at Saadiyat began with a surprise so magical, it etched itself permanently in our memories. As we strolled along the shore a pod of at least fifteen dolphins! With playful grace, they swam just beyond the safety buoys, their sleek bodies glistening in the morning sun. Captivated, we followed them for nearly 2 kilometers, their joyful presence mirroring our own excitement about the adventure. As they danced their way toward Jumeirah Saadiyat, we knew it was a farewell gift from the island, a final farewell from paradise.

It’s no exaggeration to say Saadiyat Beach stole our hearts and earned a coveted spot amongst our top 10 beaches worldwide. The combination of its natural beauty, pristine white sand, and crystal-clear turquoise waters created an unforgettable experience

Amenities and Activities

While the captivating beauty of Saadiyat Beach rightfully dominated our stay, Saadiyat Rotana offers a plethora of amenities and activities catering to diverse interests. For those seeking active pursuits, the Bodylines Fitness Club boasts state-of-the-art equipment, while tennis courts and mini golf provide fun challenges. Adrenaline seekers can unleash their inner adventurer at the water sports center offering kayaking and paddleboarding.

Those looking for pampering can find solace at the Zen the spa, known for its rejuvenating treatments and tranquil atmosphere. Families can create lasting memories at the Explorers Kids Club, featuring supervised activities and a dedicated splash pool. In the evenings, live music and vibrant entertainment at the hotel’s bars and restaurants provide a lively atmosphere.

While we primarily focused on soaking up the sunshine and cool waters of the beach, a quick dip in the resort’s stunning outdoor pool offered a refreshing change. The pool area, with its comfortable loungers and shaded areas, seemed perfect for relaxing afternoons, especially for families.

The sights of Abu Dhabi

While Saadiyat Rotana offered a world of its own, we couldn’t resist venturing out to further explore the vibrant city of Abu Dhabi. As seasoned Abu Dhabi vacationers, we’ve experienced some of its must-sees like the Louvre and Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, the breathtaking 360° view point, and many other unforgettable places. We highly recommend checking out our posts on the city’s marvels. This time we focused on these gems that we already discovered and love:

Al Maryah Island Shopping Spree: A familiar stomping ground, Al Maryah Island never disappoints. Browsing through luxurious brands and indulging in delicious snacks on the Four Seasons’ beautiful terrace offered a delightful afternoon escape.

Rosewood Abu Dhabi’s Golden Hour Glory: As the sun dipped below the horizon, we savored handcrafted cocktails on the stunning terrace of the Rosewood Abu Dhabi. The vibrant colors painting the sky created a truly magical experience.

Hakkasan at Emirates Palace: A Culinary Masterpiece: Exchanging our half-board dinner for lunch allowed us to indulge in a truly memorable culinary experience at Hakkasan within the majestic Emirates Palace. The exquisite Cantonese cuisine and opulent setting made for an unforgettable evening.

We spent countless hours basking in the sun, swimming with vibrant marine life, and marveling at the endless turquoise horizon. The combination of impeccable food – especially the melt-in-your-mouth Wagyu steak – breathtaking views, attentive service, and a vibrant atmosphere made each meal an unforgettable experience. We savored every bite, every sip, and every moment spent in this haven of culinary excellence.

A Garden Oasis: The hotel’s beautifully landscaped gardens added another layer of serenity to our stay. We loved strolling along the winding paths, admiring the diverse flora and fauna, and feeling the gentle breeze caress our skin. The gardens offered a tranquil escape from the sun’s warmth and provided a perfect backdrop for quiet moments of reflection.

Sunsets that Stole the Show: Each evening, as the sun dipped below the horizon, the sky transformed into a breathtaking masterpiece. These were moments of pure magic, etched into our memories as the perfect ending to each day.

A few tips from our trip

Sun Safety First: Pack reef-safe sunscreen and a snorkeling t-shirt. Trust us, you’ll thank yourself later! The sun is intense, and those Instagram-worthy underwater explorations can leave you looking like a lobster without proper protection.

Seaview Splurge: Trust us, the ocean views are worth the upgrade! The breathtaking panorama from your balcony elevates the entire experience.

Breakfast Buzz: While the breakfast spread is fantastic, be mindful of the crows that might try to snatch a croissant. Keep an eye on your plate!

Mosquitos? Not Here!: One pleasant surprise – we encountered zero mosquitos during our stay. Pack light and enjoy the balmy evenings without worry.

Morning Magic: Head for the beach early! We were lucky enough to witness a pod of dolphins frolicking just offshore. An unforgettable morning surprise!

Sunset Serenade: Don’t miss the breathtaking sunsets from the beach. The sky transforms into a canvas of fiery hues, making every evening a magical spectacle.

Dont forget:  observe the mesmerizing nature and marine life, but resist the urge to touch. These wonders thrive on minimal interaction. Remember, only take pictures, only leave footprints.

Overall impressions

Our stay at Saadiyat Rotana was a truly enjoyable experience. The resort itself was stunning, from the welcoming lobby and meticulously maintained gardens to the sparkling pools and pristine beach. Everything felt spotless and beautifully appointed, reflecting a high level of care.

The service was generally good, with a few minor hiccups here and there. While not quite seamless, it didn’t significantly impact our overall enjoyment. Our room was beautifully decorated and comfortable, providing a relaxing haven after days exploring or soaking up the sun.

The food was a mixed bag. While the breakfast buffet offered a decent variety, it wasn’t exceptional. However, the other restaurants, particularly Turtle Bay, impressed with their delicious dishes and exceptional service.

The highlight of the resort, however, was undoubtedly the beach. It truly lived up to its reputation, offering pristine white sand, crystal-clear waters, and a sense of tranquility. We even had the incredible luck of spotting dolphins on our last morning!

The clientele was predominantly European and Russian. While most guests were respectful and added to the elegant atmosphere, we did encounter a few instances of less considerate behavior from some Russian guests. This wasn’t a major issue, but it’s worth mentioning for potential travelers seeking a completely serene environment.

Overall, we rank Saadiyat Rotana as our third favorite resort on Saadiyat Island, falling just behind the phenomenal Park Hyatt and St. Regis Saadiyat. However, it offered an excellent value for the price and provided a luxurious and relaxing escape with some minor shortfalls.
