We visited Veligandu Island Resort & Spa in 2022, and it left us utterly spellbound. After seven visits to the Maldives, this resort might just take the crown as our absolute favorite. In fact, we’d go so far as to say it was, hands down, the best overall resort experience we’ve ever had.

Why did we choose this hotel
Fast forward to Easter 2022. As a family of three – two adults and our adventurous then 10-year-old daughter – we craved an unforgettable Maldivian escape. We envisioned a luxurious yet laid-back 5-star haven, teeming with marine life for our snorkeling adventures, and boasting a breathtaking water villa that captured the essence of the Maldives.
Having explored the Maldives before, we knew what we were looking for. The stakes were high, so we dove into months of months of research. We read hundreds of reviews, scrutinized pictures, and virtually explored the island via Google Maps – every detail mattered. While we understood true luxury comes at a premium, we sought exceptional value for our money.
Ultimately, Veligandu Island Resort & Spa caught our attention. It checked all the right boxes: luxury with a relaxed vibe, incredible snorkeling, a stunning water villa, and the promise of delicious cuisine. Could this be the resort of our dreams? We decided to find out firsthand. We planned a two-week Maldivian odyssey, splitting our time between Furaveri and Veligandu – a double dose of paradise.

The location
Veligandu Island Resort & Spa is nestled within the Rasdhoo Atoll, renowned for its vibrant reefs and incredible marine life. This location guarantees easy access and puts you right in the heart of the Maldives’ underwater wonders – ideal for snorkelers and divers alike.
Getting to Veligandu offers options for all travelers. We opted for the scenic 25-minute seaplane flight from the seaplane terminal neighboring Malé International Airport, offering stunning aerial views of the turquoise waters and scattered islands. While the price tag might seem steep, the experience is truly unforgettable.
For those who prefer a more cost-effective option or are hesitant about seaplanes, a speedboat transfer directly from Malé is also available. The speedboat journey takes approximately 2 hours, offering a comfortable and scenic alternative.
Arrival and Lobby
After a blissful week in Furaveri (make sure to check out our review!), we were already relaxed, sun-kissed, and eager to explore Veligandu – the anticipated highlight of our 2-week Maldivian odyssey. Our transition day started with a leisurely morning at Furaveri: breakfast, a final snorkel, and a bittersweet checkout as we awaited our noon seaplane departure.
Switching resorts often means a quick hop back to Malé before your next flight. Thankfully, there were no delays! Before long, we were soaring towards Malé, enjoying another stunning seaplane flight. After a comfortable hour in Veligandu’s luxurious lounge, complete with refreshments, we were airborne again, this time aiming for our final destination.
Our seaplane landed on a small neighboring island, and a short 5-minute boat ride whisked us to Veligandu. While seaplanes usually dock at the resort, ours was the second to arrive, creating a brief wait – but every moment offered breathtaking views of turquoise water and pristine sand. A warm welcome with cold towels and refreshing drinks greeted us at the pier.
From our first steps into the open-air, tropical-style reception, we knew this would be a special experience. Check-in was smooth, and we were thrilled to learn about our complimentary upgrade to a Jacuzzi Water Villa! The resort embraced a laid-back, “no shoes, no problem” vibe, and with the island so compact, everything was just a short stroll away.
Our first hour confirmed our expectations: incredible service, a relaxed atmosphere, and a sense of paradise. We hadn’t even officially had lunch, but the staff quickly offered us a meal at the beach bar to ensure we were well-fed and happy. It felt like we’d finally arrived at our ultimate Maldivian escape.
Our room
Our Jacuzzi Water Villa, number 108, awaited on the peaceful sunrise side of the island. This meant glorious mornings and shaded afternoons – a perfect choice. While Veligandu is one of the Maldives’ older resorts, our villa exuded a timeless Maldivian charm. It wasn’t ultra-modern, yet incredibly comfortable and inviting. (Tip: they are currently undergoing renovations and adding more water villas!) With only 12 villas on our side, the atmosphere felt blissfully private.
Upon entering, we were greeted by a cozy hall with a coffee station, fridge, and a spacious dressing area – a welcome touch. From there, we stepped into the main room, which immediately captivated us. The spacious room boasted a luxurious double bed (and an extra bed for our daughter) positioned strategically to offer stunning ocean views – a breathtaking sight to wake up to every morning. A plush sofa provided a cozy spot to relax, and a massive glass wall opened onto our private sun deck.
The sun deck became our favorite spot, offering uninterrupted panoramic ocean views. Wooden steps led us directly to the turquoise waters below, making snorkeling excursions effortless. It was a true paradise! We saw vibrant coral gardens, a turtle, sharks, countless fish… and even dolphins and rays gracefully gliding by, all just steps from our villa.
Restaurants and Bars
Food is a highlight at Veligandu, and with good reason! We were on a full-board plan, offering access to delightful meals with plenty of options. Despite being one of the smaller resorts, Veligandu boasts two restaurants and two bars:
Dhonveli
The main buffet restaurant where we savored breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Reviews had set our expectations high, and honestly, we were blown away! Both my husband (with his discerning French palate) and I are self-proclaimed foodies, and we agree the quality here was outstanding.
The buffets were truly a feast for the senses. Each meal showcased a dazzling array of choices, beautifully presented, and bursting with incredible flavors. While we typically prefer a la carte dining, the chefs at Dhonveli raised the bar. Their buffet creations easily surpassed most high-end restaurants we’ve experienced.
Dhonveli offered endless possibilities – egg stations with custom omelets, pancakes, donuts, crispy pastries, salads, warm dishes, charcuterie and cheeses, even a bounty of tropical fruits! Delicious coffee, hot chocolate, and fresh juices completed the morning spread. Lunch and dinner were equally impressive: a spectacular array of hot and cold dishes, and live cooking stations featuring fresh steak and the catch of the day. The open-air restaurant, with its stunning views and barefoot-friendly sand floor, added to the delightful atmosphere.
Medivaru
While we primarily enjoyed the fantastic buffets at Dhonveli, an a la carte restaurant was available for a different culinary journey.
Thundi bar
No Maldivian adventure is complete without a beach bar, and Veligandu didn’t disappoint. With a sun-drenched deck and refreshing options all day long – soft drinks, cocktails, light snacks – it became our go-to spot after lunch and every evening. With a cocktail in hand, the beach bar was the perfect place to unwind and watch nature’s most captivating performance: the sunset. The ever-changing shades of blue throughout the day culminated in a breathtaking sunset, turning the sky into a canvas of fiery oranges and pinks – a daily spectacle that rivaled any movie or theatre play we´ve ever seen.
Athiri bar
Great place for adults seeking a tranquil escape. Located on the island’s quieter side, this bar provided a relaxed atmosphere and beautiful views.
The beach
Veligandu’s beaches were the epitome of Maldivian perfection. The sand, as soft and pristine as powdered sugar, stretched out seemingly endlessly, a dazzling contrast against the turquoise water’s mesmerizing shades. The gentle slope of the shoreline created a shallow entry into the ocean, ideal for leisurely wading and refreshing dips in the crystal-clear water.
Each walk around the island transformed into a visual feast. The combination of brilliant white sand, impossibly vibrant turquoise, and the swaying palm trees framing the shore was breathtakingly beautiful. Whether seeking sun-drenched relaxation or gentle strolls along the water’s edge, Veligandu offered a beach experience that truly felt like paradise.
Amenities and Activities
Veligandu offered everything we needed for a perfect Maldivian escape. We quickly settled into a blissful daily routine:
- Morning: Starting the day with a refreshing swim from our private sun deck followed by a delicious breakfast at Dhonveli.
- Mid-morning: Gearing up for underwater adventures with a snorkeling expedition on the incredible house reef, teeming with vibrant marine life. We saw everything from playful dolphins and colorful fish to graceful rays and majestic turtles.
- Afternoon: Exploring the island by foot, soaking up the sun on the pristine beach, or simply relaxing and admiring the ever-changing colors of the ocean from the beach bar’s sundeck. Lunch fueled our afternoon adventures, followed by another snorkeling session.
- Late afternoon: Switching gears to enjoy the stunning pool or simply relaxing on the beach, taking in the island’s tranquility.
- Evening: A quick change of clothes just in time to witness the daily masterpiece – the breathtaking sunset. Sipping cocktails from the beach bar while nature’s fiery display unfolded became our cherished ritual. Delicious dinners at Dhonveli capped off our perfect days.
Veligandu’s natural beauty was our true highlight – the island, ocean, and house reef were our ultimate destinations. But for those seeking more variety, the resort offered plenty of options:
- Sports and Recreation: Volleyball, badminton, a football ground, and a fitness center for staying active. Fishing excursions, including morning, afternoon, and deep-sea trips, were available for those wanting a taste of Maldivian fishing.
- Games Room: An air-conditioned space for friendly competition, with table tennis, billiards, darts, and foosball.
- Ocean Activities: The Ocean Dive Centre and Ocean Sports Centre provided everything from guided dives and PADI courses to windsurfing, waterskiing, jet skiing, kayaking, and more.
- Wellness and Relaxation: The Duniye Spa offered a range of pampering treatments to promote relaxation and well-being.
- Entertainment: The resort provided a varied evening program, including cultural presentations, live bands, DJ nights, and even a lending library.
For those who forgot essentials or wanted a Maldivian memento, the resort also offered a charming souvenir shop. Additionally, guests had peace of mind knowing there was a medical center with an in-house doctor readily available if needed.
One aspect that truly impressed us at Veligandu was the abundance of sun loungers and other relaxation furniture, including sun beds and swings. This meant there were always enough options available, regardless of the time of day or how many guests were at the resort. This contributed significantly to the uncrowded and relaxed atmosphere that permeated Veligandu. We never felt like we were competing for space, and the tranquil vibes remained constant throughout our stay.
House reef and Snorkeling
As seasoned Maldivian adventurers, having explored reefs at six different resorts, we can confidently say Veligandu takes the crown for the best snorkeling experience we’ve ever encountered. Hands down!
Our daily snorkeling expeditions were pure underwater magic. From our water villa on the sunrise side, we simply had to step off the sundeck and swim towards the drop-off to be greeted by a breathtaking spectacle. The coral gardens lining the island were in pristine condition, teeming with vibrant colors and diverse marine life. Schools of colorful fish danced around the coral formations, while turtles and even sharks gracefully glided by, leaving us breathless. It truly felt like swimming through a living aquarium.
Venturing beyond our doorstep, we discovered equally captivating underwater worlds. Snorkeling by the water villas on the sunset side and near the tip of the sandbank revealed even more wonders. We even had the unforgettable experience of encountering a majestic turtle and, on our last day, a pod of playful dolphins numbering in the tens, hunting and frolicking for hours.
One of the most significant aspects of Veligandu’s snorkeling experience is the unparalleled ease of access. The house reef is readily available directly from the beach, allowing you to immerse yourself in the underwater wonders with minimal effort.
Veligandu’s house reef truly surpassed all our expectations. The diversity of marine life, the health of the coral, and the effortless accessibility make it a paradise for snorkelers of all levels.

- Snorkeling Heaven: Veligandu boasts the best house reef we’ve ever encountered in the Maldives (and after six different resorts, that’s saying something!). The vibrant coral gardens, teeming with an incredible diversity of marine life, left us breathless. From playful dolphins to majestic turtles and colorful fish dancing around stunning coral formations, every snorkel adventure was a journey of discovery.
- Culinary Delights: Food was a highlight at Veligandu. We were consistently impressed by the quality and variety offered at Dhonveli, the main buffet restaurant. From fresh, local ingredients to international specialties, there was something to tantalize every taste bud. The a la carte restaurant provided a welcome change of pace for those seeking a different culinary experience.
- Island Enchantment: The breathtaking beauty of Veligandu stole our hearts. The pristine white sand beach, contrasting beautifully with the turquoise waters, was a visual treat. Daily walks around the island, exploring hidden coves and soaking up the serene atmosphere, became a cherished ritual.

- Home Away from Home: Our spacious and comfortable room provided a peaceful haven after a day of exploring the island and the reef. The private sundeck was the perfect spot for enjoying the morning sunrise and the breathtaking views.
- Simply Everything!: In all honesty, it’s difficult to choose just a few highlights. Veligandu’s appeal lies in the perfect blend of stunning natural beauty, exceptional service, delicious food, and a relaxed atmosphere. It truly is a paradise for anyone seeking an unforgettable Maldivian escape.

A few tips from our trip
Sun Safety First: Pack reef-safe sunscreen and a snorkeling t-shirt. Trust us, you’ll thank yourself later! The Maldivian sun is intense, and those Instagram-worthy underwater explorations can leave you looking like a lobster without proper protection.
Mosquito-Free Bliss: If you’re prone to bites, consider opting for a water villa. Unlike their beach counterparts, these havens seem to be immune to the local mosquito population, offering a bite-free sanctuary.
Luggage Limits: Pack light! The seaplane has a strict 20 kg luggage limit per person. Exceeding it means paying a hefty $5 per extra kilo, per trip (that’s right, double the ouch!). So, channel your inner minimalist and leave the non-essentials at home. Remember, you can always buy a new “I heart Veligandu” t-shirt there.
Undergoing renovations. While dreaming of our next Veligandu escape, we discovered the resort is undergoing an exciting transformation! As one of the Maldives’ oldest resorts, they’re taking a well-deserved break for refurbishment until November 2024. We can’t wait to see the refreshed Veligandu and experience its renewed magic upon its grand reopening.
Dont forget: observe the mesmerizing nature and marine life, but resist the urge to touch. These wonders thrive on minimal interaction. Remember, only take pictures, only leave footprints.
